Setting up an RTK network in your Trimble GPS

This guide will explain you on how to setup your trimble GPS with an RTK network like RTK FIX. When you connect your Trimble GNSS receiver to an VRS RTK network there are a few things that need to be setup correctly in order to receive correction data. In this guide we have used the Trimble R8 with Trimble Access software. The main features are the same for all other devices so this should give you a good idea of how to do it.

Step 1

In this example we will use Trimble access. The settings in all Trimble devices are mostly the same, just make sure that your device has internet, the broadcast format is set to VRS RTCM and that you have sufficient satellite coverage.

In the main menu go to Settings -> Connections -> GNSS contacts

Step 2

In GNSS contacts you have 2 options. You either change the settings of your current GNSS contact or you create a new one. We recommend creating a new one.

In this step click on  -> New

Step 3

When creating a new GNSS contact make sure you set the following parameters:

  • Name = RTK FIX
  • Contact type = Internet rover
  • Route through controller = yes
  • Network connection = operation system – WiFi, Cellular
  • Use RTX = no
  • Use NTRIP = yes
  • Use NTRIP V1.0 = no
  • Use proxy server = no
  • Connect directly to mountpoint = no
  • NTRIP username = Fill in you RTK FIX details
  • NTRIP password = Fill in your RTK FIX password
  • IP Address = rtkfix.net  (or 165.227.159.178
  • IP Port = 2101

Step 4

The first part is now complete. Now you need to make sure that your Trimble GNSS is using the right format. If you have used Trimble VRS NOW before then probably the broadcast format is set to (VRS CMR). RTK FIX uses the standard RTCM protocol which is compatible with any receiver on the market. You just have to make sure your receiver is setup in the right way.

To do this you wil have to go to Settings -> Survey Styles

Step 5

When setting up your Survey Style you again have 2 options. You either change the parameters on your current profile or you create a new one. Again we suggest creating a new one specifically for RTK FIX. In this tutorial we have already created one but will show you the parameter that is the most important

To do this you wil have to select the profile you wish to change

Step 6

When editing your survey Style in the Trimble access software it is important that you change the Broadcast format from VRS CMR to VRS RTCM.

To do this you will have to click on Rover options

Step 7

In this step you will have to set the parameters for your receiver. Important for the RTK Corrections is that you set the Broadcast format  to VRS (RTCM)

Step 8

In this step you will have to set the parameters for your receiver. Important for the RTK Corrections is that you set the Broadcast format  to VRS (RTCM)

Step 9

Your Trimble GPS and Trimble Access are now setup properly. To  connect to our network you click on Measure

Step 10

Select the survey style you have created for RTK FIX

Step 10
